Laura Fashoda was recently appointed director of restaurants for Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile.

1. What are you looking forward to the most in your new role? 

I am looking forward to the challenge of a larger property. With the recent renovations at the Chicago Marriott Downtown, we have so many beautiful spaces to feature for our guests.

2. How do you think past experiences have prepared you for this role?  

I think I’ve been very lucky working under leaders and with teams that have continually pushed me and taught me new things. I’m not a person who sits back and watches. I learn by doing, and I have worked with others that have given me the space and opportunity to try things out and learn from mistakes.

3. How did you get into the industry?  

I’ve always enjoyed helping others. I previously practiced law but wasn’t fully engaged in the craft. Working in hospitality seemed to be a natural transition, as I moved from assisting clients to assisting guests. That, with my love of food and beverage, made hospitality the right fit. I haven’t looked back since.

4. What are you hoping to achieve in your new role?  

I want to fully realize the potential of all our spaces and people. I enjoy mentoring my teams to activate them so they have the same passion for their work that I do. There are great experiences to be had at our newly-renovated Reviver and I want to be sure we are fully developing that.

5. What do you enjoy most about the industry?  

I live for and love creating food and wine experiences for others. There is joy in a great dining experience or teaching someone something new about wine. It just makes me feel so fulfilled.
