Karen McGuigan Celebrates 30 Years in Chicago Hotel Industry

Chicago native, Karen McGuigan, general manager at Hyatt Centric The Look Chicago, has just reached a milestone in her career—30 years in the Chicago hotel industry.

McGuigan began her career in January 1987, working at the front desk at Hyatt Regency O'Hare. For 15 years, she worked at various Hyatt locations in the Chicago area in a number of different capacities, including director of security at Hyatt Regency Chicago. In 2014, she joined the pre-opening team for Hyatt Centric, which opened last April.

IMEX America 2016 Breaks New Records

According to recently published figures, IMEX America 2016 has officially broken multiple records. The event, which was held Oct. 18–20, had an attendance increase of 14 percent from last year.

There was a 6 percent increase in the attendance of hosted buyers, making up 3,216 from 60 countries. About 10,000 buyers attended group appointments and prescheduled appointments were upwards of 60,000—far more than the numbers gathered in 2015.

Omni Hotels & Resorts Announces Updates

Omni Hotels & Resorts is announcing new developments for the hotel. The 16-story hotel is set to open in June 2017, showcasing 300 guest rooms and suites, and 24,000 square-feet of meeting space, including a 13,000-square-foot ballroom. Additionally, Omni Hotels & Resorts has appointed Gayla Guyse as director of sales and marketing for the Omni Frisco Hotel. Guyse has 20 years of experience working for the Omni Frisco Hotel.

Rockford Prepares for Multiple Sports Tournaments

Four large-scale sports tournaments are set to be hosted in the Rockford, Ill., region next year. It’s estimated that the participants, coaches and fans flocking to the area will contribute $5 million to the local economy during their stay.

The tournaments that have been booked so far include: the 2017 U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships, Feb. 23–25; Amateur Athletic Union Midwest Regional Gymnastics Championships, May 5–7; Premier SuperCopa Championship, Jun. 9–12; and the Elite Clubs National Playoffs, Jun. 22–27.

Meet Nate Johnson, The Ice Man

Ice sculptures are coming back to events, says artist Nate Johnson. The co-owner of Johnson Studios, which opened in 2010, sold his first sculpture back in 1989. In his busy season (from Mother’s Day to New Year’s Eve), he can carve up to 150 blocks a week. “For a while it was a cliché thing with many companies giving clients menus to order. But we’re trying to get away from that,” he says. “We encourage every client to give us an idea of who they are and what interests they have so we can design a special piece for every event.”
